Next, Fairtrade Parliament?

Oxfam’s Biggest Parliamentary Coffee Break with MP Metiria Turei
It’s not every day you get to dress up as a large hairy creature and hug politicians.
During the first week of Fair Trade Fortnight, Caffe L’Affare and All Good Bananas converged on Parliament for an Oxfam Biggest Coffee Break. Fair Trade City Wellington would do a lot in the name of fairness (and the lovely team at All Good), and apparently that includes wearing a gorilla suit and handing out bananas to MPs.
There was a great turn-out from the whole range of politicians, many of whom spoke in strong support of Fairtrade and fairness. Fair Trade City Wellington Trust Board Member Marion Wood invited the many MPs present to help create the first Fairtrade Parliament in the Southern Hemisphere.
Will Wellington make Fairtrade headlines once again? Watch this space.

Act Globally… and Act Locally?
Kiwis involved in the P3 Foundation have organised a national event that will warm the cockles of your heart.
This Friday is your chance to act positively and create good effects both in Wellington and for struggling producers in developing countries. Pay Fairtrade Forward will be happening all day this Friday, from 7am onwards at a range of cafes including Duke Carvell’s (3 Swan Lane, Te Aro), Haya Cafe (89 Aro Street, Aro Valley), Lamason Brew Bar (Lombard Street), Peoples Coffee Newtown (12 Constable Street, Newtown), an Kapai (Courtney Place).
The Wellington organisers describe their initiative thus:
“Everyone has seen the movie Pay it Forward with the cute wee kid wanting to do good in the world.
This is our Kiwi take on that classic concept. On Friday 18th May we ask you to wander into one of the Fair Trade cafes in Wellington for your daily caffeine hit. The defining difference? You not only indulge yourself, but leave a $4 credit for the next person in line. This not only rewards the customer for buying Fair Trade but will without a doubt brighten their day.”
It’s instant Fairtrade karma!

Fair Trade Fortnight was launched in Wellington on Friday 4th of May at 5.30pm, with Mayor Celia Wade-Brown toasting those involved at a Fairtrade Cocktail evening at the Hawthorn Lounge.
“Fair Trade Fortnight is an annual opportunity to show our support for Fairtrade, how it benefits the global community and how every choice matters”, said Priya Talwar, Chair of the Fair Trade City Wellington Trust.
“As a Fair Trade City there’s a lot for Wellingtonians to celebrate. Our Fairtrade identity not only benefits the growers, their families and natural resources in developing communities but also creates sustainable trade and economies for our local businesses. It’s a win-win partnership between producers and consumers.”
“Fairtrade offers consumers and businesses a powerful way to reduce poverty through their every day shopping.”
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, a long-time supporter of Fairtrade, said Wellington continued to embrace its Fairtrade status. “Our capital city sees Fair Trade as a good international connection, combining economic, social and ecological wellbeing.”
This Fair Trade Fortnight, events and activities will happen all over the city, including a Fairtrade Fiesta, a visit by a Papua New Guinean coffee producer, and a Fairtrade Breakfast.
“Fair Trade Fortnight provides opportunities for like-minded people and businesses to mix and mingle and find out how we can all make a difference by choosing fair this year” said Talwar.
“There are lots of simple ways people can join in, be an important part of Fair Trade Fortnight and make a choice that really matters”

Auckland to be First Fair Trade Super City
Big news: Auckland has publically announced its commitment to becoming the world’s first Fair Trade Super City.
Fair Trade City Wellington may jokingly imply that Auckland has finally caught up with Wellington, but really, we’re overjoyed to see this massive commitment to Fairtrade in Aotearoa.
Mayor of Fair Trade Super City, Len Brown, said “This is a sign of Auckland’s commitment to issues of social justice and fair and equitable trade. It shows that Auckland cares greatly about economic sustainability and the wellbeing of the people and organisations that we work with.”
Tino pai, Auckland!

Fair Trade Fortnight 2012: VicIDS Fairtrade Forum
Wellington is practically bursting with anticipation for Fair Trade Fortnight.
The VicIDS Fairtrade Forum is one of the events I’m metaphorically bursting for. On Wednesday 9th of May from 5.30-7.30pm, Wellingtonians will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from Michael Toliman, a Fairtrade coffee producer from Papua New Guinea about the impact of Fairtrade on his community, listen to Matt Lamason (Peoples Coffee) speak about starting up a Fairtrade business, AND get the goss from Fairtrade NZ‘s Pravin Sawmy about why Fairtrade Universities are so necessary.
And, as Suzanne Paul would say: wait, there’s more! After the official speeches are over, there will be chance to devour delicious Fairtrade desserts, mingle with fantastic Fairtrade businesses such as Trade Aid and All Good Bananas, and find out more about the “Make Vic Fairtrade” campaign. And all for free! Whew.
Next Wednesday, 5.30pm at the Memorial Theatre Foyer, Student Union Building. Check out the event on Facebook.
